Computer Network
Two or
more computers or peripherals connected together for sharing data (files) or
hardware resources such as printer form a network. Networks may vary in term of
size (the number of computers connected together), complexity (the way
computers are connected) and geographical spread.
The
network specific to the users within the organisation is called the Intranet.
Internet is also a network but it is huge and open to all.
The
computer in a network is known as node. Each node is connected through either
cables or wireless medium.
How a
computer network helps?
A
computer network is useful in the following ways:
1.File sharing What if you need to access a file stored on another
computer? A network makes it easy for everyone to access the same file or

Security is good - users cannot see other

Purchasing the network cabling and file
servers can be expensive. ·
Managing a large network is complicated,
requires training and requires a network manager to manage. ·
If the file sever has a fault then users may
not be able to run applications. The work will be come to a halt. · If
there is a problem in a network then all the computers connected to the
network cannot be used. · If
there are more number of users than the defined number then the transfer and
sharing of files may become slow. Types of Transmission/Communication Media Computers are connected to each other on a network either
through wires or electromagnetic medium. Communication medium is defined as the
means by which data travels through a network. Wired connection When the computer is connected to the Internet using a wire,
it is called a wired connection. Ethernet cable (cable used for connecting to
the Internet) is used to transfer data between connected PCs. In a small

relatively costly. Wireless connection Wired networks can be inflexible in terms of mobility and to
use your device in a different location, it is necessary to run extra cables
and switches to connect a device to the network. Wireless networks are prone to interference by other
networks, wireless enabled devices, and objects such as walls that can obstruct the connection. Wired network installations can take longer to set up
devices such as the routers, switches, and hubs and configure security applications
and firewalls. It lacks the data transmission speed capability of wired
networks. It is less secure than wired networks since the
communication signals are transmitted through radio wave and it can easily be
intercepted. The cost of implementing a wireless network is relatively
inexpensive. Wireless networks allow you to be more mobile with the
flexibility to access the network from any location using any type of
wireless enabled device. The installation of a wireless network is faster and easier
