Operating system
Operating system
Operating
system is the first program that is loaded into the computer. The process of
loading the operating system is called booting. Operating system manages
computer's hardware and software resources. It acts a link between the software
and the hardware. It controls and keeps a record of the execution of all other
programs that are present in the computer, including application programs and
other system software.
Need for an Operating System
The
operating system helps you to communicate with the computer. Without OS you
cannot use any computer or mobile device or any software like word-processing
software, spreadsheet software or any other application software. It makes
computer user friendly. It allows computer to use resources efficiently and
effectively. It is designed in a way to permit effective development, testing
and introduction of new functions without interfering with the service.
The
operating system is the backbone of any computer system as it performs the
following basic tasks.
·
Recognizing input from the keyboard
·
Sending output to the monitor
·
Keeping track of files on the hard disk
·
Controlling peripheral devices, such as disk drives, printers
and scanners
Examples of Operating System
Have you
ever thought that why notifications look different on an Android phone than on
an iPhone?
Why you cannot run a
Windows program on a Macintosh computer? Different operating system have
different approach as how a computer will stores files, switch between
different applications, manages memory and interacts with peripherals like
printers and cameras.
Some operating systems are designed by groups of programmers,
like the open source, such as Linux, while others are commercial products made
by an organisation, such as Microsoft's Windows and Apple's MacOS.
Different operating systems run on different types of hardware
and are designed for different types of applications. For example, iOS is
designed for iPhones and iPad tablets, while Mac desktops and laptops use macos.
Popular desktop/laptop operating system
Microsoft Windows
Microsoft Windows was developed in 1985, and since then it
remains the most popular operating system for home and office computers. It has
a Graphical User Interface (GUI). It is a multi-user and multi-tasking
operating system. Windows 10, is the latest version and also used on some
tablets.
Though the versions of the Windows OS for smartphones have
been less successful.
Apple macOS
Apple's macos, successor to the popular OS X operating system,
runs on Apple laptops and desktops, that is only on Apple produced hardware.
The Macintosh user interface style has been adapted to many other operating
systems. macOS shares some features from other operating systems like Unix,
Linux. While the graphical interfaces are different, Mac OS many of the
underlying programming interfaces and command line features are the same.
Signature elements of macos include the dock used to find
programs and frequently used files, unique keyboard keys. It is known for its
user-friendly features, which include Siri, a natural-voice personal assistant
and FaceTime, Apple's video-calling application.
Linux operating system
Unlike many other operating systems, development on Linux was
started by Linux Finnish programmer Linus Torvalds in 1991 and later
programmers from all over the world collaborated on its open source code.
Linux is widely used on corporate and scientific servers,
including cloud computing environments. It can be run on a wide variety of
hardware and is available free of charge over the internet. Different versions
of Linux are available for distribution such as Ubuntu, Fedora and Mint.
Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS GNU/Linux)
Bharat Operating System Solutions (BOSS
GNU/Linux) is an Indian Linux distribution derived from Debian (Unix like
operating system). It is developed by Centre for Development of Advanced
Computing (C-DAC). BOSS Linux is officially released in four editions: BOSS
Desktop (for personal use, home and office), EduBOSS
(for schools and education community), BOSS Advanced Server and BOSS MOOL. The
software has been endorsed by the Government of India for adoption and
implementation on a national scale.
Ubuntu
Ubuntu is a free and open-source Linux
distribution and released in three editions: Desktop, Server, and Core. Ubuntu
is named after the African philosophy of ubuntu, which officially translates as
"humanity to others" or "I am what I am because of who we all
are”. A default installation of Ubuntu contains a wide range of software that
includes LibreOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird and several lightweight games such
as Sudoku and chess.
Mobile Operating System
Mobile
operating system OS is especially designed to power smartphones, tablets and
wearables devices.
Google's Android OS
Android
is the most popular operating system used on smartphones and tablets in the
world developed by Google. Unlike iOS, it can be used on devices made by a
variety of different manufacturers because large part of it is open source and
can be legally anDROID modified and published.
Android,
like iOS, comes with an application and media store called the Play Store built
by Google. In addition, Google has developed Android TV for televisions,
Android Auto for cars, and Wear OS for wrist watches, each with a specialized
user interface. Variants of Android are also used on game consoles, digital
cameras, PCs and other electronics.
It allows
Android users to select and download applications developed by third party
developers and use them. There are around 2.0 lakh plus games, application and
widgets available on the market for users.
Know More
Symbian operating system was popular smartphone operating
system until the year 2010. It was primarily used by Nokia for its phones.
Mobile OS has greatly evolved from Palm OS in 1996 to Windows
pocket PC in 2000 then to Blackberry OS and Android.
An app is a type of software that allows you to perform
specific tasks. Applications for desktop or laptop computers are sometimes
called desktop applications, while those for mobile devices are called mobile
apps. The apps can be downloaded from Google's Play Store of Apple's App Store.
Apple iOS
Apple's
iOS is one of the second most popular smartphone operating systems. It runs on
Apple hardware, including iPhones, iPad tablets and iPod Touch media players.
It includes the App Store to purchase apps and download free software and a
simple, interface with minimal hardware buttons.
