What is Computer Networking, Write Advantages and Disadvantages of computer networking?

Computer Networking

Computer Network

Two or more computers or peripherals connected together for sharing data (files) or hardware resources such as printer form a network. Networks may vary in term of size (the number of computers connected together), complexity (the way computers are connected) and geographical spread.

The network specific to the users within the organisation is called the Intranet. Internet is also a network but it is huge and open to all.

The computer in a network is known as node. Each node is connected through either cables or wireless medium.

How a computer network helps?

A computer network is useful in the following ways:

 1.File sharing

What if you need to access a file stored on another computer? A network makes it easy for everyone to access the same file or software application and prevent from accidentally creating various version

2. Collaboration and communication

It's hard for a team to work together if they do not know what the other team member is doing. network allows the users to share files, view other people's work and exchange ideas more efficiently

3. Sharing computer peripherals

With a network, several computers can share the same printer, scanner and other similar resources.

4. Remote access

Network allows greater mobility while maintaining the same level of productivity. With remote acces in place, users are able to access the same files, data and messages even when they are not presene

5. Data backup

A network makes it easier to back up all the data or files on a server or other storage medium.

Advantages of computer network

Computers in a network has the following advantages:

·      Cost effective as the resource can be used by multiple persons

·      Software licences are likely to be cheaper than buying several standalone licences

·      Save time while sharing files

·      Need not depend on Internet connectivity or its bandwidth to transfer files

·      All types of files such as text, audio, video, graphics can be shared easily

·      Security is good - users cannot see other users' files unlike on stand-alone machines.

Disadvantages of computer network

Computers in a network has the following disadvantages:

·      Purchasing the network cabling and file servers can be expensive.

·      Managing a large network is complicated, requires training and requires a network manager to manage.

·      If the file sever has a fault then users may not be able to run applications. The work will be come to a halt.

·      If there is a problem in a network then all the computers connected to the network cannot be used.

·      If there are more number of users than the defined number then the transfer and sharing of files may become slow.

Types of Transmission/Communication Media

Computers are connected to each other on a network either through wires or electromagnetic medium. Communication medium is defined as the means by which data travels through a network.

Wired connection

When the computer is connected to the Internet using a wire, it is called a wired connection. Ethernet cable (cable used for connecting to the Internet) is used to transfer data between connected PCs. In a small wired network, a single router may be used in connect all the computers.

The Bluetooth technology got its name in honour of Harald Bluetooth, the king of Denmark in the mid-tenth century.

Wired connection tends to work slightly faster than a wireless connection though it provides convenience of using it within range.

Let us compare the differences between wired and wireless connection.

Wired Connection

It provides reliability and stability and the signal is not influenced by other connections.

It is much faster than wireless networks.

Any unauthorised user is unable to connect to the network unless their device is connected using an Ethernet cable.

Ethernet cables, switches, routers, and other hardware is relatively costly.

Wireless connection

Wired networks can be inflexible in terms of mobility and to use your device in a different location, it is necessary to run extra cables and switches to connect a device to the network.

Wireless networks are prone to interference by other networks, wireless enabled devices,

and objects such as walls that can obstruct the

connection.

Wired network installations can take longer to set up devices such as the routers, switches, and hubs and configure security applications and firewalls.

It lacks the data transmission speed capability of wired networks.

It is less secure than wired networks since the communication signals are transmitted through radio wave and it can easily be intercepted.

The cost of implementing a wireless network is relatively inexpensive.

Wireless networks allow you to be more mobile with the flexibility to access the network from any location using any type of wireless enabled device.

The installation of a wireless network is faster and easier because it requires less equipment,

Know More

Router is a device used to transfer the information between computer networks. Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transmitted over a network in a

certain amount of time. It was expressed in bits per second (bps), these day since the network links have greater capacity, therefore, it is measured in millions of bits per second (megabits per second, or Mbps) or billions of bits per second (gigabits per second, or Gbps).

The more bandwidth a data connection has, the more data it can send and receive at one time. Bandwidth can be compared to the amount of water that can flow through a water pipe. The bigger a the pipe, the more water can flow through it at one time.

Types of Computer Network

Computer networks classified on the basis of geographical spread are:

1. Local Area Networks (LAN)

2. Personal Area Network (PAN)

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

4. Wide Area Networks (WAN)

Let's Explore

All versions of Microsoft Windows have had an MS-DOSlike command-line interface (CLI) called Command Prompt. To open the command prompt in Windows, press Windows key + R. Type the command cmd in the Open text box. Click the OK button. You will get the black screen. Type the command dir. To clear the screen type cls.

So, that’s your activity for today we will meet tomorrow.

Thank You!!
